The Off-Campus Housing search engine now uses search-by-example to provide maximum flexibility in finding housing. Click the "New Search" button to bring up a blank search screen. Click the "Submit Search" button to search for housing that meets your criteria. The search page holds a number of searchable fields. These fields limit the search to the value you select, and in all cases may be left blank. Leaving a field blank causes the search engine to ignore that field during the search. All fields ignore text case, so upper or lower case does not matter.

• Drop down boxes: These fields default to displaying "none". This indicates a 'blank', and will be ignored. Selecting a value from the drop-down list will limit the search to find *only* items with that value.
• Max Rent Desired: This field expects a number, and will return only entries listing a rent less than or equal to the value entered.
• Max Occupancy, Lease Length (months), Number of Rooms, Number of Bedrooms: These fields expect a numerical value, but will use whatever is entered for a partial match. For example, entering '1' in lease length would match anything with a one month lease, ten month, eleven month, or twelve month lease.
• Renters Wanted, Utilities Provided, Other Features: These list boxes accept multiple item selections. They will return entries that contain all of the items selected in the list. Hold down the Ctrl key to select multiple items.

Clicking on the "Submit Search" button will invoke the search based on the criteria you have selected. The number of listings found is displayed above the actual search results.

Here are some examples of searches and what they will look for:

Using multiple selection lists:  Search result items are displayed in a multi-select type scrolling list with a check box to the left of each item.  Clicking on the "Show only selected items" button will reduce the display to only show the items that were checked.  Clicking on the "Show all items" button will expand the display to show all the items that were returned by the search.  This feature makes it convenient to print or view a narrower list of items than returned by the search. 

Viewing multiple pages:   When more than a pre-determined number of items (based on system performance) are returned by the search, "Next >>" and "<< Prev" buttons become available to page through all the items.  Selecting items on different pages are remembered, and will be displayed with the "Show only selected items" button as described above.
